DISCOID

The ceramic vases in Caroline Cole’s Discoid Collection are cast from a mould created from a hand-built plug that has a flat almost circular elevation on one side and a tall thin oval elevation on the other, creating an object that is reminiscent of a discus. The shape is perfectly balanced, and the hand-crafted nature of the gentle curves means that people instinctively want to touch the art works generated from this mould.

The large, almost flat sides of these ceramic vases offer a canvas on which Caroline Cole has meticulously hand painted patterns, many of which explore trompe l’oeil effects, using her familiar palette of geometric shapes and an interplay of textures, that create three-dimensional patterns, some of which are complex in the extreme. As with many of Caroline’s studio ceramics, mathematical sequences and geometry drive the patterns and colours on these elegant ceramic vases.   The combination of exposed underglaze and matt glaze add further subtlety and texture to the surface.  Each piece is handmade with extraordinary precision and can take months to create, as layers of glaze are applied and fired several times to create depth and intensity of colour.

Each vase is a unique, handcrafted work of art – a collectable ceramic.  However, if you are looking for something made specifically for you, Caroline enjoys designing with her clients, to create individual commissioned pieces.

The Discoids stand 230mm tall and are 230x100mm in plan.
